Enhancing Scramjet Performance By Boundary Layer
Combustion
The aim of this project is to reduce the aerodynamic
drag of high-speed flight vehicles. A major impediment to achieving
hypersonic flight is the high level of frictional forces that typically
account for half the aerodynamic drag of the vehicle. A novel technique for
reducing frictional drag has recently been proposed and tested in
Australia. Boundary layers are "lubricated" by burning hydrogen
in them. Reductions in skin friction of up to 75% have been measured in
controlled wind tunnel tests. This project will investigate how this
technique can be implemented in realistic flight configurations. The
reduction in drag force will be measured directly. This technology may
finally enable achievable hypersonic flight. This research is funded by the Australian Research
Council.
There are a number of opportunities for postgraduate
students to obtain scholarships to undertake research in the CENTRE FOR HYPERSONICS. General
information about scholarships available at UQ can be found here .
The major scholarships available are:
- Australian
Postgraduate Awards (APA) - for
Australian citizens and permanent residents
- University of Queensland
Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UQPRS) - for
any suitable applicants
Scholarships for Specific Projects
